Murrieta is a city in Riverside County. It borders San Diego County, Orange County, Los Angeles County, and Camp Pendleton. Murrieta is known as the “Gem of the Valley”. A diamond is featured on the city seal as well as on street signs and freeway interchanges.
The history o Murrieta began when the California Southern Railroad was constructed in 1887connecting Murrieta to Temecula. 800 people lived in Murrieta at the time which was mostly ranch land with sheep. Tourists came for the local hot springs. That changed when the trains stopped in 1935.
In the early 1980s, Interstate 15 was built. This with Interstate 215, US Route 395, and Stae Route 79 next to Murrieta, the connection to San Diego, Los Angeles, Riverside, and other larger cities, characterizes it as a commuter town. Suburban neighborhoods grew and by 1991, the city of Murietta was incorporated. Its houses are more affordable than many of the neighboring cities. Murrieta’s location led to a 133.7% population increase in the last census.
Murrieta’s largest employer is the Murrieta Valley School District. Murrieta was listed as the safest city in Riverside County and in 2009, was the second safest city with a population of over 100,000 in the United States behind Irvine, California.
