About Carmel Valley
Carmel Valley, San Diego
Carmel Valley is a neighborhood in the northwestern corner of San Diego. It is a newer area formed by the City of San Diego in February 1975 with construction beginning in 1983. The name Carmel Valley comes from the Carmelite Sisters of Mercy. They were given the land by a local landowner for taking care of a sickly family member. The Sisters established a dairy farm and monastery in the area around 1905.
The area is a planned community of homes with many commercial offices, hotels, retail stores, and restaurants. Carmel Valley is bordered by Interstate 5 to the west, pacific Highland Ranch and Del Mar Mesa to the east, Los Penasquitos to the south and Pacific Highland Ranch to the north.
Since Carmel Valley is a community and not an incorporated city, several school districts serve the area. For kindergarten to 6th grade, the north section is part of the Solana Beach School District, and the south section is managed by the Del Mar Union School District. Middle and high schools are managed by the San Dieguito Union High School District.
Besides Downtown San Diego, Carmel Valley is a major center of employment with many financial, medical, and engineering companies in the area.
